Stereotypes of The Netherlands -

September 3rd, 2014 (06:09 am)

I'm not all around here all too often but this just made me smile and I wanted to share it with you, as... perhaps some of these stereotypes indeed hide a bit of truth - or even more!, LOL!

You know, that country of which most of Americans think Amsterdam is the capital of Denmark, or vice versa? :p
No, just a terrible, tiny, overcrowded spot located near the North Sea, some of which still think it's Hippy Country (no, it's NOT AT ALL, and smoking pot is more allowed in the USA than it is over here in my country nowadays, just to debunk some kind of silly ideas).

Well, I'm from "Train Delay Central", and my BF is a so-called 'Stubborn Blond Speedskater' aka a Frysian - but he hates snow and ice, and will never be spotted anywhere near it, despite indeed being stubborn and blond. LOL!

I most of all had to laugh aout the comments about our Southern neighbours, aka The Belgians - no, they are NOT stupid, and YES they have splendid beer - but the sidenote 'fix your highways, we need them to get to France!' is just so much spot-on!!! :D

More on that coming soon... as I've just come back from La Douce France, and well yes, I'm in love with that country.
As I've been for over a couple of decades already.

Danny Cavanagh - In Thought

As an American, I've never actually heard of Americans thinking Amsterdam is the capital of Denmark but knowing this place, I wouldn't be surprised to learn there are many folks who genuinely think that. I am often ashamed of being American honestly!!

But I have to say I LOL'd big time at "You're ours now, bitch!"

LOL, I only just noticed your reply as it for some strange reason ended it up in my spam bin...

Well, that "Amsterdam is the capital of Denmark" (or vice versa) is a common stereotype 'joke' over here, pointing at the so-called ignorance the US folks are supposed to have about Europe - but hey, I can tell you, a majority of folks over here wouldn't be able to designate Arizona, Washington, Nebraska (or whatever a state of the US) over here on a map - even when pointed a gun at their heads.
Apart from perhaps recognizing Alaska, Florida and California - most folks have no clue at all! ;-)

"You're ours now, bitch" is of course a hint towards the dyke being established between the areas of Noord-Holland and Friesland, turning our former Zuiderzee into a gigantic lake.
"Sadistic Wet Bastard" is a related hint to the fact that there's still a threat from the Northern Sea, as The Netherlands are still, for the most of it, below sea level. ;-)

"Too far away for any practical purposes" in fact hints to one of our most gorgeous cities, Groningen.

In all, pretty funny.
Even funnier I think was the uproar about it in my country, quite a lot of folks apparently lacked the sense of humour to just have a smile at this and acknowledge that, in fact, quite a few statements are pretty close to the truth. :-D

Oh BTW, NEVER EVER be ashamed of being American!

Haha, weird LJ.

Yeah I honestly couldn't tell you much about The Netherlands either. I mean unless you grow up studying the crap out of geography of other countries extensively you wouldn't really be overly familiar with them!

I sometimes am ashamed though. Americans are often thought of as stupid and it certainly can be true. Not to say there isn't stupidity everywhere of course! Anywhere you go that people are, there's stupidity! I dunno, I was raised English so really I guess I'm just American by where I was born.
